The new 1.5L GDI four-cylinder turbo petrol engine pushes out 168 PS and 280 Nm and is expected to be offered in the upcoming Sierra as well
Tata Motors is planning to bring in a new 1.5L turbo petrol engine to expand the lineups of the Harrier and Safari. Previously, the launch timeline was confirmed to be towards the end of this FY and now in an exclusive report we can say that the new powertrain will launch in November 2025 taking advantage of the festive season furore.
The engine is also expected to be sold with the upcoming Sierra which will be offered in both ICE and electric guises. However, the Sierra will be introduced as an EV first in early 2026. Several car manufacturers have witnessed strong demand for petrol-powered SUVs in the midsize space and some are offering choices like CNG, mild hybrid and strong hybrid versions.
Tata launched the Harrier in 2019 and a couple of years later the Safari arrived. Both are offered with a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder diesel mill only which is sourced from FCA despite the brand rapidly strengthening its all-electric range. The much-anticipated 1.5L turbo GDI petrol engine is expected to strengthen Tata’s midsize SUV portfolio.

Along with improving competitiveness, the new powertrain could also help lower the starting prices of the models it will be offered in. Producing around 168 PS of maximum power and 280 Nm of peak torque, the 1.5L turbo petrol unit will more likely to be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter automatic unit.
Recently, Tata secured right from FCA to upgrade the 2.0L oil burner too. It eliminates the requirement to get a stamp of approval from FCA for making changes to the engine. With greater autonomy over its calibration and development roadmap, Tata is expected to chart more efficient upgrade paths while keeping cost pressures in check.

The development holds added importance given the versatility of the Multijet engine which has powered models like the Jeep Compass, MG Hector and Jeep Meridian. However, despite this independence on the engineering front, production of the said diesel engine will reportedly continue at the Ranjangaon facility.
