Tesla Model Y has been made available in RWD and Long Range RWD trims in India; boasts a top speed of 201 kmph and 0-100 kmph time in just 5.6 seconds

After years of hiccups, the American electric carmaker, Tesla, has stepped foot into the Indian market with the launch of the Model Y as its first dealerships has been inaugurated in Mumbai. The standard Rear-Wheel Drive version of the Tesla Model Y is priced at Rs. 59,89,000 and features a WLTP-certified range of 500 km between charges.

It clocks a 0-100 kmph sprint in 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 kmph. The Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive trim, meanwhile, carries a price tag of Rs. 67,89,000. It is claimed to have a driving range of 622 km in the WLTP cycle and boasts a top speed of 201 kmph and an accelerate time from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.6 seconds – three tenths quicker than the RWD variant.

Both versions share the same clean design language: a coupe-like silhouette, flush door handles, and minimalist aesthetic – true to Tesla’s global template. Given the absence of an all-wheel-drive or Performance variant for now, the focus seems to rest on efficiency and affordability in the premium electric crossover space.

No visible changes appear in hardware such as wheels or body panels between the two trims. The Tesla Model Y competes directly with premium EVs such as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 alongside entry-level luxury EVs. he Model Y RWD typically use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, while the Long Range variant uses a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit.

LFP chemistry allows for full daily charging without degrading battery health, which suits high-usage conditions. Fast charging compatibility is expected to support up to 250 kW, enabling a 10-80 per cent top-up in well under 30 minutes when using compatible Superchargers or DC fast chargers.

Inside, the Model Y follows Tesla’s signature minimalism. The 15-inch central touchscreen is the only visible control interface, handling everything from navigation and media to HVAC and drive modes. Voice commands, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and smartphone key access via the Tesla app are supported. There is no traditional instrument cluster or head-up display. The all-glass roof, dual wireless chargers, and premium synthetic upholstery are standard, as is a massive front and rear boot storage capacity.
